Their primary function is to maintain the specific temperature required by the process for the working fluids, while simultaneously enhancing efficiency. Heat exchangers may serve as standalone units—such as heaters, coolers, or condensers—or they may be integral components of larger process equipment, for instance, the heat exchangers within an ammonia synthesis tower.

This design not only offers a larger heat-transfer surface per unit volume but also delivers superior heat-transfer performance, making it a standard, widely used heat exchanger in industrial applications for many years.
