The Development of Heat Exchangers

Author:

A heat exchanger is an energy-saving device that facilitates heat transfer between two or more fluids at different temperatures. It enables heat to be transferred from a higher‑temperature fluid to a lower‑temperature one, bringing the fluid temperatures up to the specified process requirements and thereby meeting process‑related needs. At the same time, it is one of the key pieces of equipment for improving energy efficiency. The heat exchanger industry spans nearly 30 sectors, including HVAC, reclaimed water treatment, chemical engineering, and petroleum, forming an interconnected industrial chain. According to data, in 2010 China’s heat exchanger market was valued at approximately RMB 50 billion, with the majority of demand concentrated in the petroleum, chemical, metallurgical, power, shipbuilding, and district heating sectors.

At the same time, it is one of the key pieces of equipment for improving energy efficiency. The heat exchanger industry spans nearly 30 sectors, including HVAC, reclaimed water treatment, chemical engineering, and petroleum, forming an interconnected industrial chain. According to data, in 2010 the Chinese heat exchanger market was valued at approximately RMB 50 billion, with the majority of demand concentrated in industries such as petroleum, chemicals, metallurgy, power generation, shipbuilding, district heating, refrigeration and air conditioning, machinery, food processing, and pharmaceuticals.
Among these, the petrochemical sector remains the largest market for heat exchangers, with a market size of RMB 15 billion; the power and metallurgical sectors account for approximately RMB 8 billion; the shipbuilding industry commands a market exceeding RMB 4 billion; the machinery industry represents about RMB 4 billion; and the district heating sector surpasses RMB 3 billion, while the food processing industry also boasts a market of nearly RMB 3 billion. In addition, specialized heat exchangers are indispensable in fields such as aerospace vehicles, semiconductor devices, conventional and nuclear islands of nuclear power plants, wind turbine generators, solar photovoltaic systems, and polysilicon production, collectively accounting for a market of roughly RMB 13 billion.
The domestic heat exchanger industry has achieved remarkable progress in areas such as energy conservation and efficiency improvement, enhanced heat transfer performance, reduced heat transfer surface area, minimized pressure drop, and increased equipment thermal intensity. Driven by the steady growth in demand for heat exchangers across sectors including petroleum, chemical engineering, power generation, metallurgy, shipbuilding, machinery, food processing, and pharmaceuticals, China’s heat exchanger industry is expected to maintain stable growth over the coming period. From 2011 to 2020, the industry is projected to expand at an average annual rate of approximately 10–15%, with the market size potentially reaching RMB 150 billion by 2020.
