What is a heat exchanger?

A heat exchanger is a device that transfers part of the thermal energy from a hot fluid to a cold fluid; it is also referred to as a heat exchange apparatus. Heat exchangers are ubiquitous pieces of equipment in the chemical, petroleum, power, food, and many other industrial sectors, playing a crucial role in production processes. In chemical manufacturing, they serve as heaters, coolers, condensers, evaporators, and reboilers, among other functions, making them even more widely used. Although there are numerous types of heat exchangers, based on the principles and modes of heat transfer between hot and cold fluids, they can be broadly classified into three main categories: shell-and-tube, direct-contact, and regenerative. Among these three types, shell-and-tube heat exchangers are the most commonly employed.
