Introduction to Conventional Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers

Author:

A conventional air‑cooled heat exchanger is a device that uses ambient air as the cooling medium, which flows across the exterior of finned tubes to cool or condense the high‑temperature process fluid inside. It goes by various names, such as finned‑fan heat exchanger, air‑type finned heat exchanger, and finned‑tube air‑cooled heat exchanger; it is also referred to as an air cooler or an air‑cooled heat exchanger, collectively known as an air cooler. Originally, water was considered the more ideal cooling medium, so traditional industrial cooling systems typically employed water. Since the 1920s, however, air cooling has gained increasing attention, and in certain applications, water cooling has gradually been replaced by air cooling. This shift can be attributed primarily to the following factors:

  Originally, water was a highly suitable cooling medium, which is why traditional industrial cooling systems have long relied on it. Since the 1920s, air cooling has gained increasing attention, and in certain applications, water cooling has gradually been replaced by air cooling. This shift can be attributed primarily to the following factors:
  1. With the development of industry—particularly oil refining, petrochemicals, metallurgy, and the power sector—the demand for water has increased sharply, leading to widespread water shortages.
  2. Public demand is steadily increasing for environmental protection and for preventing and reducing industrial water use from polluting rivers, lakes, and seas.
  3. With energy resources becoming increasingly scarce, it is imperative to maximize energy conservation.
  4. The trend toward larger-scale facilities is driving an ever-increasing demand for water;
  5. Advances in air-cooling technology can partially or fully replace water cooling.
