Key characteristics of the sector at this stage include: a large number of certified manufacturers—numbering in the thousands—and intense price competition in the mid- and low-end product segments, particularly among companies located along the coastal regions of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Shandong, and other areas.
1. Industry Development Status
At present, the pressure vessel industry has reached a highly mature stage of development. Key characteristics of the sector include: a large number of certified manufacturers—numbering in the thousands; intense price competition in the mid- and low-end segments, particularly among companies located along the coastal regions of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Shandong, which engaged in rapid expansion during periods of favorable market conditions, resulting in capacity growth far outpacing demand; and a predominance of private enterprises, most of which operate on a relatively small scale and focus on different product priorities. While the majority of firms concentrate on producing mid- and low‑end products, some have also obtained manufacturing qualifications for Class I, II, and III pressure vessels.

Since the second half of 2016, the global economy has been on a sustained recovery, and the domestic economy has also shown steady improvement. Industries such as petrochemicals, coal chemical engineering, pharmaceutical chemicals, and nuclear‑energy‑related chemical engineering have gradually turned around, and the rebound in downstream sectors has effectively boosted market demand for pressure vessel manufacturing. Signs of industry recovery are very pronounced, with many petrochemical equipment manufacturers reporting significant improvements in their sales and order intake.
Looking at the future development trends of the pressure vessel manufacturing industry: As a critical piece of equipment in modern chemical process flows, pressure vessels are widely used in petrochemicals, power generation, metallurgy, nuclear energy, and other sectors. They are core assets whose domestic production is actively encouraged by the state, and overall market demand and industry prospects remain promising. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the state will prioritize the planning and vigorous advancement of world-class, large-scale refining‑and‑chemical integration projects across seven major petrochemical industrial bases, while phasing out outdated technologies, uneconomical scales, and facilities that fail to meet environmental standards. With the gradual commencement of construction on China’s large‑scale refining‑and‑chemical complexes and integrated projects, related capital expenditures are expected to translate into a steady stream of procurement orders, generating substantial market demand for equipment suppliers. Moreover, as “Made in China 2025,” the drive to build a manufacturing powerhouse, and the national Belt and Road Initiative continue to gain momentum, coupled with the rollout of sector‑specific plans and supportive policies, the pressure vessel manufacturing industry is likely to enjoy favorable opportunities in the foreseeable future.
3. Future Development Trends of the Industry
Pressure vessels are primarily used in industries such as petrochemicals, power generation, metallurgy, and nuclear energy, and their development is closely linked to the growth and demand of these downstream sectors. From the perspective of the overall development of the equipment manufacturing industry: after years of accumulation, China has established a comprehensive industrial system that is large in scale and possesses a certain level of technological sophistication, becoming a key pillar of the national economy. China has already become a major player in equipment manufacturing and is striving to become a global leader in this field. In particular, heavy-duty pressure vessel equipment for sectors like petrochemicals has largely ceased to rely on imports; for some critical core components characterized by high technical complexity and intricate manufacturing processes, China has secured independent intellectual property rights, achieving domestic production. Moreover, a handful of products have even approached international cutting‑edge standards and entered the global market. In recent years, the Chinese government has successively introduced a series of industry‑support policies—ranging from the State Council’s “Several Opinions on Accelerating the Development of the Equipment Manufacturing Industry” and the “Plan for Adjusting and Revitalizing the Equipment Manufacturing Industry,” to the “Energy Development Strategic Action Plan (2014–2020),” “Made in China 2025,” and the “Petroleum and Chemical Industry Development Plan (2016–2020)” —providing a favorable policy framework for the pressure vessel sector.
As international economic and technological trade exchanges continue to strengthen, and as the design, manufacturing, and operational management of pressure vessels become increasingly sophisticated, the development of pressure vessels—both domestically and internationally—is gradually trending in the following directions:
(1) Generalization and Standardization of Pressure Vessels. The generalization and standardization of pressure vessels have become one of the irreversible trends. This is because such approaches enhance interchangeability, which not only facilitates routine maintenance and logistical support for user organizations but also minimizes design and manufacturing costs to the greatest extent. Moreover, for an export‑oriented country like ours, standardization serves as a passport to the international market. Analysis of practices among major pressure vessel exporters worldwide demonstrates that internationally oriented engineering firms can drive the development of their national pressure vessel industries and secure international recognition of their standards, thereby gaining greater influence on the global stage and reaping substantial economic benefits.
(2) Specialization and Professionalization of Pressure Vessels. When operating under special service conditions, pressure vessels with tailored functionalities must be employed. For instance, nuclear reactor vessels, crystal‑processing vessels, and rocket fuel tanks all demand exceptional resistance to corrosion, high pressure, and elevated temperatures. Such vessels are widely utilized in applications like ethylene polymerization and synthetic crystal production. With the emergence of new materials and advances in metallurgy, the pressure‑bearing capacity and strength limits of ultra‑high‑pressure vessels have steadily improved, further driving their development. It is precisely these specialized requirements that propel the continuous evolution and refinement of pressure vessels toward greater specialization and professionalization, while simultaneously imposing increasingly stringent demands on vessel materials, design, fabrication, inspection, and in‑service maintenance technologies.
